Get to know the course first by playing a practice round before you play a competition.
Know if the distance markers are measuring to the beginning or to the middle of the green. Distance markers from the tee box are always meant to measure to the middle of the green. You can find the latest information in a Stroke Saver or Birdie Book.
Read the Local Rules on the scorecard carefully before you start. Be sure of your distances. You should know how far you can hit with each club. The difference between each club for an average player is about 10-15 meters.
Don’t try to attempt an impossible swing, play the simplest move. Often it is better to place the ball before a hazard than to take the risk to play in it.
Build your game strategy around your strengths. With a Handicap of 18, you have an extra stroke per hole. If you are not a professional, you do not have to play par.
